Just like the rest of the human body, teeth come in all shapes and sizes.

But, whilst we might all dream of a tiny waist or trim sixpack, what’s the aspiration when it comes to teeth?

What makes a great tooth?

When it comes to picture-perfect teeth there are several factors that come into play:

  • The shape

Teeth come in all different shapes, resembling rectangles, squares and even triangles, but the most preferable silhouette is the rectangle.

Go too rectangular though – and without softly curved edges – and the result can be what is rather unforgivingly branded as a ‘horsey’ smile.

  • The size

Proportions play a big part in the overall look of a smile.

To appear natural and evenly balanced, the two front teeth should be slightly larger than the rest. The two teeth on either side of these – the lateral incisors – should then be similar in shape but a touch smaller (by about a fifth).

  • The edges

People often seek the assistance of cosmetic dentists wanting the bottom edge of all their front teeth to line up perfectly – but this rigid formation would be a mistake!

Instead, the most natural and attractive arrangement is for the two lateral incisors to be a fraction higher than the front two teeth. The canine teeth, which need to be pointy – but not too pointy (think vampires!) – should then mirror the length of the front two teeth.

Whilst a straight line isn’t desirable – a smooth one is. And, although the bottom edge of most teeth tends to be slightly uneven and a bit bumpy, aesthetically, the preference is for them to be smooth.

  • The gumline

Although you might not think it, showing too much gum when you smile can really affect the appearance of your teeth.

This condition – known as a gummy smile – is a common problem, affecting over 25% of the population. The excess gum not only distorts the true size and shape of teeth but can throw an otherwise great smile off balance.

  • The colour

Ok, so the colour doesn’t alter the shape of teeth, but it does play a big part in their overall look. All the dream contours in the world, won’t matter a jot if the teeth in question are stained, yellowing.
