Diastema is a relatively common condition where the two upper front teeth have an oversized gap between them. This, and other spacing issues, can be caused by several factors:
- Missing or undersized teeth – a missing tooth or teeth that are particularly small, can be a big contributing factor in suffering from gapped teeth.
- Oversized labial frenum – this is the tissue that connects the upper lip to the gum line just above the upper front teeth. If this tissue is overdeveloped it can force a gap between the two teeth.
- Gum disease – suffering from gum disease can create gaps between teeth as they become looser within the gums. Severe gum disease can cause teeth to fall out.
- Aging – as we age natural gum recession can expose new gaps.
- Thumb sucking – if you sucked your thumb as a child this can impact the natural positioning of teeth. Other habits such as lip sucking and tongue thrusting, can also cause crooked teeth and spacing problems.
- Accident or injury – if you’ve been involved in an accident or suffered an injury this may result in missing teeth.

Large gaps in teeth
If your teeth have very large gaps, it may be that veneers aren’t the ideal solution. In this instance, dental bridges can be an effective treatment – helping to close the spaces while keeping your teeth in perfect proportion to build a radiant, natural-looking smile.
