    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is fluorosis?

Essentially, fluorosis is a permanent dental condition that changes the appearance of the tooth enamel. In mild cases, the teeth are usually scattered with small white flecks and fine lacy white lines. By contrast, in moderate to severe cases, these spots and lines are much more profound. The teeth may also have a rough pitted surface and large brown spots and discolouration are common.

    What causes fluorosis?

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that is found in water and it can help to prevent tooth decay. However, it can also be found in some toothpaste and dietary prescription supplements. If too much is consumed early in life (i.e. before the age of 8), fluorosis is likely to occur.

This is the time at which a child’s permanent teeth are forming below the gum and the excess fluorosis is believed to affect the production of the enamel. Therefore, only children are at risk of developing fluorosis. If you have symptoms in adulthood, unfortunately, the damage has been done and the only option is to seek dental fluorosis treatment.

    How can fluorosis be treated?

Fluorosis isn’t a disease and, if mild, it is often unnecessary to have it treated. However, if it’s severe and you’re unhappy with the appearance of your teeth, there are a number of dental fluorosis treatments to choose from – including, for example, the addition of porcelain veneers.

This quick and easy cosmetic procedure will successfully disguise the effects of the fluoride, covering the white and brown spots, hiding any discolouration, and creating a ‘perfect’ white smile.
